Pros And Cons Of Focus On Skincare Among Gen Z

Gen Z and the skincare boom has become a topic of discussion following the recent ‘Sephora kids’ controversy. This generation has had a skincare revolution, going against cultural beliefs and norms towards beauty and diversifying the beauty world. Skincare has become inclusive of everyone, skin colors and skin types. This has sparked all kinds of comments so with that, let’s unpack the pros and cons of Gen Z’s focus on skincare.

Pros

Self-care has become a top priority, and one of the ways it’s practiced is by having a skincare routine. Not only does it boost one’s self image but also increases self confidence and contentment. Moreover, taking care of one’s skin prevents skin issues such as sun damage (which is prevented by wearing sunscreen) and acne. Gen Z is fixated on prevention rather than correction. Some ingredients used in the skincare products reduce fine lines, wrinkles and acne. Another advantage is the increased knowledge on skincare. Gen Z, being tech savvy, is armed with knowledge from the internet on skincare products and its ingredients, respective skin types and research. They are then able to make informed choices about what to put on their skin.

Cons

Due to the exposure of social media where an unrealistic beauty standard has been set, there is a lot of pressure to match the perfect filtered faces presented. This can cause increased self-consciousness that fuels insecurities and eventually brings about low self esteem. Additionally, information overload and misinformation contributes to incorrect use of products that may damage the skin or cause allergic reactions. The extreme advertisement of beauty products through influencers who have a young audience also has its downside. Some may rush to purchase a certain product just because their favorite influencer uses it without knowing its effects.

In conclusion, as much as skincare has its benefits, one needs to find their balance as skincare evolves. When unsure of what to use, consult a dermatologist, esthetician or a qualified professional. Let’s embrace ourselves, listen to our skin, and find what works best for us.
