These attributes led him into the world of politics; with his outspoken ideas to eliminate government corruption and cartels he was a prominent player in the presidential election.

According to Will Freeman, fellow for Latin America studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, “Fernando Villavicencio—a centrist ex-lawmaker and anti-corruption advocate—will vie for the anti-Correista vote, but his reputation as a Lasso ally could hurt him.”

Villavicencio was a likely candidate for presidency which is also a potential motive for his untimely assassination. However, Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso says, “For his memory and his fight, I assure you that this crime will not remain unpunished.”
