Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10 during his “American Comeback Tour” stop at Utah Valley University. Authorities identified Tyler Robinson as the primary suspect, alleging he fatally shot Kirk in the neck with a rifle.
Kirk was 18 when he founded Turning Point USA, a movement aimed at mobilizing conservative youth. Rapidly gaining support and recognition from high-standing conservatives, such as President Donald Trump and businessman and activist Bill Montgomery. However, his rise in fame was also marked by controversies over his several comments described as racist and homophobic. For example, when discussing race, he had said that “Joy Reid, Michelle Obama, Sheila Jackson Lee and Ketanji Brown Jackson… had to go steal a white person’s slot to go be taken somewhat seriously”. Furthermore, when discussing feminism, he stated women should “reject feminism. Submit to your husband”. On immigration, he has declared that “large dedicated Islamic areas are a threat to America.” Turning Point had also created a “Professor Watchlist” in which students were encouraged to report professors they believed to be too “woke”.
Conservatives laud Kirk’s memory, mourn the loss alongside his wife and daughter (his wife now taking over as the CEO of Turning Point), and proclaim him a martyr. However, others express concern that, while the murder was undeniably wrong, his assassination will make people forget what he stood for and glorify his viewpoints, which many disagree with.

Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old man and the primary suspect, has been charged with “aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering and commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child.” Officials believe that he fired the fatal shot from a rooftop at Utah Valley University before fleeing the scene. He was later persuaded to surrender by his father and a youth pastor. Utah prosecutors have announced that they will seek the death penalty.
While his ideals remain large sources of controversy, it is clear that his murder was a slash at democracy itself. The idea that murder is a viable or supported option if one disagrees with another’s political views is one we can see fought against on every page of America’s history. Yet, similarly to those times, our nation remains deeply divided over its most fundamental ideals.
