November

  • November 1, 1848 – First medical school for women, the New England Female Medical School, opens in 1874. It merges with Boston University to become one of the world’s first co-ed medical schools.
  • November 3, 1957 – Soviet Russia launched the world’s first inhabited space capsule, Sputnik II, which carried a dog named Laika.
  • November 4, 1890 – The first electrified underground railway system was officially opened in London.
  • November 4, 1922 – King Tut’s tomb was discovered at Luxor, Egypt, by British archaeologist Howard Carter after several years of searching. The child-King Tutankhamen became pharaoh at age nine and died around 1352 B.C. at age 19.
  • November 8, 1895 – X-rays (electromagnetic rays) were discovered by Wilhelm Roentgen at the University of Wuerzburg in Germany.

  • October 23rd, 1941 – Walt Disney’s animated film “Dumbo” was released
  • October 23rd, 2001 – Apple releases the first iPod capable of storing 1,000 songs. The iPod came with a 5 GB hard drive and was fully Mac compatible.
  • October 23rd, 2015 – Adele releases her single “Hello” which becomes the 1st song with more than a million downloads in 1st week.
  • October 28, 1636 – Harvard University, the oldest institution of higher learning in America, was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
  • October 28, 1886 – The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor. The statue was a gift from the people of France commemorating the French-American alliance during the American Revolutionary War.
  • October 31, 1941 – Mt. Rushmore National was completed after 14 years of work. The memorial contains 60-foot-tall sculptures of the heads of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, representing America’s founding, political philosophy, preservation, and expansion and conservation.
  • October 24, 1945 – The United Nations was founded.
  • October 31, 1984 – Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by three Sikh members of her bodyguard while walking in the garden of her New Delhi home.
